5 useful tips to picking the perfect flatmate

Finding the right flatmate is not as easy as it would seem. We have all heard those disaster stories and swear to ourselves that we will never be a victim. How we all wish we could all turn back time to the flatmateĀ  interview stage where we could make the right decision and not pick the dud that has been living with you for the past 6 months.

So following are some useful tips to help you find the best type of flatmate.

Try to get a flatmate that matches your style and personality. This is a bit of a no brainer but thought we should mention it. If your the quiet type never pick a party person with an extrovert nature. Questions you should be asking them would be: do you like to entertain at home much or do you like to bring friends back home after a night out. Ideally, you want someone who is quiet, laid back and will respect the fact that you like your privacy, space and downtime.

Make sure you check references! Some people will not do this and will be more than happy to accept a potential flatmate at face value. Never ever do this. Of course they will put on their best face when they meet you and of course they will never tell you about past bad experiences. Too many disaster stories have unfolded this way out of pure laziness to do your due diligence. Treat it like a job interview and ask them for 3 references. If they all give the same glowing reports then your fine to accept them as a flatmate.

Get a 1 months bond. Treat it as though you were signing the lease with your real estate agent. They asked you for a bond and you are responsible for the property. If your flatmate damages anything at least you have their bond to make any repairs. If you own the home and are looking for a flatmate then this gives the the added protection in case they destroy something or skip ot on your when the rent is due. A bond is a must and if they are not prepared to do this then they are probably going to have issues paying the rent in future on time. Asking for a bond and actually receiving it is a sign of their ability and intention to pay rent to you in the future. Watch out for people who drag their feet on this subject.

Ask about partners. This should probably be the first question you ask. Do you have a partner and if so, will they be spending time with you at the place. Remember you are getting a single flatmate. You advertised for this and this is what you are expecting. You are not looking for a couple. So if they are in a relationship expect the other partner to be around a bit. If you don’t like the idea of this then it’s good to know this upfront. Also if they are single ask them if they will be going out to bars, clubs etc. If the idea of a drunk flatmate coming home at 3 in the morning on a school night is your idea of hell then be aware that certain singles may go out more than flatmates in a relationship. If your single and like to party then this is fine.

Lastly, go with your gut feeling. You are probably on your 3rd or 4th flatmate by now so you should have a good idea of what your wanting and who you would like to be living with you. For flatmate newbies you may have to go through the pain of living with a few nightmares before you get the hang of it and know what to spot. For those experienced flatties out there picking your next dream flatmate shouldn’t be an issue. You should be able to spot the right type of person fairly quickly.
